What is Balayage?

Stemming from the French word meaning “to sweep”, balayage is the freehand, painting effect used to give hair colour a natural and organic look. The overall style is softer, with highlights emulating the sun-kissed tones that can seemingly only be achieved at the beach. Offering an alternative to foil dyes, the technique has been around for a while, making sure colour is less uniform and leaving you with a more beachy finish. 

How is it Achieved?

Balayage is a freehand technique allowing highlights to be created without the use of typical colouring foils. Sections of hair are hand painted on the surface against a backing board, combining a lightening agent through to the very tips allowing colour to come alive. Hair swatches can then be covered in cellophane in order to set the dye, leaving you with random sections of lighter tresses for an effortless look.
